Live Today, and not Yesterday

Philippians 3:13-14

Alexander Dumas, once said that “living without an aim is like sailing without a compass.” What a thought! It is a great feeling to start a new day. But it is only a new day if it is different from yesterday. I mean, the reason it is called today, is because yesterday is already gone, and you are writing on a new page: “A NEW day!” Therefore, what a tragedy it is to live yesterday, while we are already in “today!”

Many people miserably fail to live the “today” because they are always locked up on “yesterday”, which is past. They carry the disappointments, the struggles, the pain, the tears, and fears of yesterday with them, and they complain that “today” is awful! But the reality is that today can be different, but it is only possible if we let go of yesterday. This is not magical! It is called a “decision.” We have to decide that we are going to live today, and not yesterday! We choose to be productive, excellent, focused, determined, committed, compassionate, loving, and caring! In other words, be the best we can be, in every way we can!

The Roman Emperor and Stoic Philosopher, Marcus Aurelius, rightly counsels us to “live each day as if it be your last.” Meaning, we got to get the most of we can from today! Again, how can we possibly do that if we are locked up on “yesterday” which is past? There is no way. Even Apostle Paul, when he looked back at “yesterday” he made a resolution: “but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” – Philippians 3:13-14. What an excellent and wise decision!

Friends, please, don’t make the mistake of carrying yesterday’s heavy load with you “today.”! Please give it to Jesus Christ right now. He Himself is extending an unmatched invitation to us: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” – Matthew 11:28-29. Tony Robbins was in line with this text when He said that “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.” Meaning, we will always get yesterday, today, if we do the very things we did yesterday! No! As a compass, the Bible teaches us to have a different goal; a different aim! After all, we are living in a new day!
