Is there anything more frustrating than getting in a car and not knowing where you are heading? Probably there is, but the truth is that not knowing where you are going is very frustrating and depressing. It makes you feel purposeless because not knowing where you are going is equivalent to wasting your time. When I finished High School in 2005, I thought I was wasting my time. I woke up every morning and sat in front of our house, wondering what to do. I had no prospects for a job or continuing education because my parents could not afford to send me to a university. I felt lost, purposeless! I was a good student, but not knowing my next steps made all my accomplishments look like a waste. But they were not a waste! It was just that I did not know where I was heading. Uncertainty is a dream crusher and the worst stop sign in our lives. After all, we have no idea where we are heading. No wonder Henry A. Kissinger said “If you do not know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere.”
The Roman Philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca rightly said, “You must know for which harbor you are headed if you are to catch the right wind to take you there.” What an incredible thought! Seneca is right. It is only when you know where you are going that GPS, maps, or even a car make sense. Without a destination, all of these things are useless.
Friends, how true is this in our lives? Only when we know where we are going does what we do every day make sense. Otherwise, we are just doing things that we can’t even explain why we are doing them. Therefore, the biggest question we should ask today is this: “Do I know where I am going?” If we can’t answer this question, we should stop now and find the answer. Otherwise, we are wasting our time. Furthermore, only when we know where we are going will we know if we are on the right path. As Seneca puts it, if we are catching “the right wind.” Paulo Coelho was right when he said that “waiting is painful. Forgetting is painful. But not knowing which to do is the worst kind of suffering.” What can be more accurate than this?
Friends, Jesus understood the danger of not knowing where to go, and therefore, He pointed out the way to us when He said:
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” – John 14:6.
When we look at this world, one thing becomes apparent: “We are heading to disaster.” Jesus also understood this when He said:
“In the world, you will have tribulation”– John 16:33.
So, the reality could not be more precise: we are heading to more pain, more destruction, and death (Matthew 7:13). But there is a different destination! There is another way! (Matthew 7:14). Our destination is heaven, where our Father God is waiting for us:
“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” – John 14:1-3.
Friends, the only way to get there is through Jesus Christ (John 14:60), and He is ready to lead us to the gates of heaven (John 16:13). He even promised that we can experience forgiveness, freedom, joy, and peace right now if we accept Him in our lives. His invitation is, “COME TO ME” (Matthew 11:28-30). You don’t have to be confused about your final destination anymore, nor be afraid of how to get there because Jesus will lead you all the way! You only need to say YES right now! (Revelation 3:20). Will you?
